GOOSE HUNTING LAKE

One of Mystery Country’s newest additions, is located northeast of Thompson on the mighty Nelson River. When Manitoba Hydro built the Kelsey Hydro generating station dam, the resulting rise in water levels created what is now called Goose Hunting Lake. Over 10 miles in length and up to 2 miles wide with depths of 30 feet creating a fisherman’s dream! Underwater structure of flooded trees, reefs and bays that harbour Monster Northern in unbelievable numbers forever watched by the piercing eyes of their smaller cousin, the Walleye.

If a person tires of catching fish to numerous to remember. It is only a short ride from camp to the Nelson River. There you have the choice of heading to the Kelsey for a tour of one of Manitoba’s many hydro electric dams. Or head downstream to explore and fish the river that was traveled inland from Hudson’s Bay by the fur traders of time gone by. Try your luck catching a Sturgeon that call the Nelson home. (If you are lucky enough to catch one, PLEASE handle with extreme care and release back to the river.)

Goose Hunting cabin sits high on a peninsula over looking the vast expanse of water and endless boreal forest that surround the area. The cabin although licensed for eight, sleeps six. The kitchen is equipped with all the necessary dishes, cutlery and things you will need for preparing your daily meals. The standard propane lights, fridge, stove, gas grill and satellite phone are provided for your comfort as well. A screen porch allows for sitting out at night to enjoy a cigar or listening to Mother Nature, free of man-made noise.

Boats are all 16 foot with either a 15 HP. or 9.9HP. two-stroke Yamaha motors. All motors are thoroughly checked before the season begins, so you can spend more time on the water. As time and resources allow these will also be replaced with four-stroke 15 HP. motors. The shower facility is your standard Black bag with shower nozzle. The running water at Goose Hunting Lake is the original bucket style, where the Rookie in the group runs for it!
